Dr Warren Harper

Dr Warren Harper is a curator, writer and researcher, originally from Basildon, Essex and is currently Director, Southend & Essex, at Metal Culture. Warren has spent much of his career living and working in Essex, though most recently he was based in Toronto, Canada, where he worked with various arts organisations and institutions across North America. He holds a PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London’s Art Department, where his research explored Essex’s role in Britain’s nuclear story, with specific focus on nuclear landscapes and communities, the curatorial, contemporary art practice and nuclear colonialism. Warren has worked with various arts organisations and institutions internationally and was director at The Old Waterworks and a board member of The Other MA, both in Southend.

Warren is interested in the art world and its accessibility, particularly from a working-class perspective. His research is informed by sustainable and ethical curatorial practices, interdisciplinary art, and art’s role within frameworks of social and environmental justice.

Dr Warren Harper

‘I have spent a large part of my life in Essex, growing up in Basildon, working in Southend and Chelmsford, and studying at the University of Essex in Colchester. It is great to be back after time away in Canada, now I can focus my energies working with, advocating for and celebrating the vibrancy of the creative and cultural sectors across the county.’
