Background
The Essex Film Collective is a network of filmmakers, actors, and crew members working across all areas of the film and TV industry in Essex. Founded in 2021, the organisation was established to create meaningful opportunities for career development through collaboration, training and industry networking throughout the area. Its mission is to elevate Essex’s profile as a thriving hub for film and TV.
The Collective also champions local filmmakers by offering regular screenings, events and promotional support to showcase talent, build confidence and inspire the next generation of storytellers in the county.
The Story behind the Essex International Film Festival
In March 2025, the Essex Film Collective launched its inaugural Essex International Film Festival, partnering with independent venues and cinemas across the county to celebrate the very best of independent film making. With the support of the Essex Film Office, the festival showcased a rich and diverse programme of films, spotlighting emerging talent and local storytelling as well as international voices from around the world. Alongside these screenings, audiences were invited to take part in a programme of masterclasses and workshops delivered by industry professionals, providing accessible learning opportunities for filmmakers at every stage of their careers.
The festival opened with a red-carpet gala event at the Curzon cinema in Colchester, attended by distinguished guests including Turner prize winning artists Gilbert and George, and Essex County Council Cultural Ambassadors Busayo Ige and Elsa James. Over three days, the festival welcomed more than 350 attendees from across the UK and beyond, including visitors from France, Scotland, Cornwall and the USA. Out of a global pool of over 200 submissions, 14 Essex-made films were shortlisted, with four going on to win major awards. To conclude the weekend, winners were celebrated at a special awards ceremony held at Chelmsford Theatre on the Sunday.
Legacy
The Essex International Film Festival helped to elevate the county as a vibrant destination for film and culture, tackling its long-standing underrepresentation in the arts and media landscape. Additionally, the project gave local residents access to a range of cinema, whilst offering a high-quality professional platform for film makers to celebrate their work.
With events hosted in Chelmsford, Colchester, Castle Point and Tendering, the festival drew remarkable audience engagement, with many guests attending multiple events over the three-day period. Holding screenings in different locations helped to bring new audiences to independent venues, encouraging community engagement and building exposure of the region’s cultural profile. This wider geographical reach not only broadened the festival’s visibility but also helped bridge communities across the country, celebrating diverse storytelling and spotlighting the region’s breadth of creativity and talent.
Among the projects strongest achievements were its ability to connect local voices to international voices, helping to put Essex on the global map and redefine perceptions of the county. There was excellent feedback from both attendees and volunteers, as well as a successful marketing campaign that generated 16,667,528 pieces of coverage across the web, TV, radio and press. In addition, the festival, garnered support from prominent media figures including Dame Helen Mirren who said:

The Essex International Film Festival will remind the film industry that we have a thriving and talented film industry right on the doorstep of London. Essex has many talented actors, directors and writers already producing great work in the county. The festival is a great opportunity to showcase that work and make new connections with the industry and audiences alike.”
